Nightingale HQ can intelligently adjust where and when data processing occurs to minimise its carbon impact.

Nightingale HQ (NHQ) is proud to announce a strategic partnership with WattTime, a leading US environmental technology non-profit and spin-out from UC Berkeley, to deliver more carbon-aware AI solutions through the integration of real-time energy data.
NHQ’s GoSmarter.ai software infrastructure utilises Microsoft Azure cloud resources to enable the time-and location-shifting of energy-intensive data processing, such as the execution of advanced optimisation algorithms. By integrating WattTime’s marginal operating emissions rate (MOER) data with the Carbon Aware SDK, Nightingale HQ can intelligently adjust where and when data processing takes place in order to minimise carbon impact.
“Through the energy data provided by WattTime, and managed via the Carbon Aware SDK, we are exploring time- and load-shifting of our optimisation capabilities. This enables us to shape application demand wherever possible,” said Ruth Kearney, CEO of Nightingale HQ.
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) presents a double-edged sword: while AI accelerates progress towards decarbonisation, its rapidly increasing energy demands risk driving up associated emissions. Nightingale HQ is tackling this challenge directly by using AI as a tool for emissions reduction, rather than an amplifier.
“There is considerable variation between different regions and times in terms of the carbon intensity of the power grid,” added Kearney. “By understanding and responding to this data, we can significantly reduce the carbon impact of AI workloads.”
WattTime’s MOER data provides insights into how clean or dirty it is to consume electricity at any given time and location. The Carbon Aware SDK, developed by the Green Software Foundation, is a toolkit that helps developers build more sustainable software by enabling decisions based on the real-time carbon intensity of electricity. By combining both, Nightingale HQ can identify the most carbon-efficient Azure region and time window in which to run data-intensive processes. These parameters can be tailored to align with manufacturers’ operational workflows and preferences, optimising performance while reducing carbon footprints.
“Synchronising demand with the cleanest times and locations can dramatically cut grid emissions. We’re excited to support Nightingale’s development of tools that automatically shift workloads to times and locations that cause less pollution,” said David Younan-Montgomery, Director of Partnerships at WattTime.
This partnership represents a significant step towards making AI infrastructure smarter, greener, and more adaptive, supporting industry’s transition to a low-carbon digital future.
